"British Matilda tanks" Artist unknown, Post-1942. Watercolour, gouache and pencil on board.
"British Matilda tanks" Artist unknown, Post-1942
Catalogue ref: INF 3/1565
Concept art of British Matilda tanks rolling through the Western Desert (which the Allies invaded in late1942), whilst a German Panzer Mk III (with soldier surrendering) goes up in flames. Of interest are the coloured pennants flying from the tank turrets, which were used to denote commanders' vehicles and also different troops within armoured squadrons and regiments when wireless communication was still rudimentary.
The image was used in at least two posters: ‘Back them up' INF 13/123 (Piece 25), and ‘Thank you Sierra Leone'
