Implementation guides

The National Archives is developing a series of practical and easy to use toolkits to help staff in public authorities who are charged with records management, and in particular with compliance with the Records Management Code. The guides support the Code and are aligned closely with its provisions so that anyone dealing with the Code can move easily from it to the related guide without confusion as to which guidance relates to which part of the Code. They provide an introduction to records management concepts and the requirements of the Code, and to the detailed guidance The National Archives has already published. It is assumed the target audience in many cases will have little or no prior experience or knowledge of records management. The guides may also serve as a briefing for senior managers.

The first in this series, What is Records Management? provides an introduction to the series. It gives a definition of records management and sets out the benefits which can be secured by its adoption. The other guides in this series expand on the various provisions of the Records Management Code such as the development of policies, the required human resources, managing records upon their creation, maintenance strategies and records disposal.
