About the Archives Portal
We have developed an online gateway to archive resources around the UK and internationally. The Archives Portal is a reference point for information about archival resources and projects that are planned, ongoing or completed. We have been collecting information about archival resources and maintaining an online portal since 2000. The Archives Portal was first known as the Archival Research Projects Register. It was then renamed the ARCHON Portal and finally the Archives Portal. These changes reflect the growth of the Portal in its scope and content.
Resources covered such as the national archive network, online finding aids, standards, conservation and professional organisations.
You can search the Portal in a number of ways. If you know the name (eg Access to Archives) or acronym (eg A2A) of the resource use a name search. To find resources that relate to a common theme (eg. Online finding aids) use a keyword search. If you are interested in resources in a particular geographical area use a region search.
Each entry can contain details on:
- name and acronym of the resource
- link to website
- starting date of the resource
- the status (planned, ongoing or completed)
- description
- guide to the heritage domain the project relates to (archive, library or museum)
- keyword
- region or geographical area
- parent organisation
- date of entry to Archives Portal
