Oral History
Oral History is the recording of people’s memories and experiences on sound and video clips. It is a vital tool because it brings a new dimension to community and family history and enables people who may have been hidden from history to be heard.
Several Archives 4 All projects have used oral history as part of their work. The project Buried Battles and Veteran Voices led by Surrey History Centre has recorded memories of surviving veterans of the Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment while oral recordings of the memories of veterans of the King's Shropshire Light Infantry have been collected through a similar reminiscence project.
The project Letter in the Attic is creating an archive of personal unpublished papers collected from local residents. The material such as letters and diaries, show the historical value of everyday ‘non-literary’ writings. Although oral history is frequently collected and widely published, the type of writing that this project is focusing on generally receives less attention.
The project queerupnorth is recording memories of people involved in the organisation 'queerupnorth', the interviews will be available online.
