Britain's Finest Treasure

A Page from the Domesday Book

A Page from the Domesday Book

26 July 2005

You could be forgiven for thinking that a cluster of precious jewels is more valuable than a bunch of old sheepskins….

But you would be wrong! Domesday Book, on permanent display in the museum at The National Archives, has been voted Britain´s Finest Treasure in a poll carried out by Channel Five and Radio Times.

Last summer the public were invited to nominate their most loved British document or artefact. The results were then whittled down to a top 10 by a specialist jury comprising Sir Roy Strong (historian), Julian Richards (presenter of Meet the Ancestors), Professor Barry Cunliffe (archaeologist), Carenza Lewis (archaeologist and presenter of Time Team) and Gill Hudson (editor of Radio Times).

In case you missed the results of the poll (Britain´s Finest, shown on Monday 25 July on Channel Five at 9pm), Domesday Book battled against the Crown Jewels, The Lewis Chessmen and the Magna Carta but still came out on top on judgement day!

You can find out more about the Domesday book in our Treasures section.
