Today marks the 90th anniversary of Britain's declaration of hostilities against Germany

04 August 2004

A handful of the 23 known surviving soldiers from the First World War will be at the Cenotaph today to mark the 90th anniversary of Britain's declaration of hostilities against Germany. These men are the only ones still able to make the journey to London. There will be a service at 11:00 led by the World War One Veterans Association. At 11:11 a piper will play a lament for those who died.

The National Archives can help you find out about the First World War and the records of those who served.
