Implementation of the Freedom of Information Act in places of deposit for public records

15 June 2004

Draft procedures for handling requests for information held in deposited public records.

The implementation of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2000 will have a profound impact on places of deposit for public records. The National Archives, in partnership with other public records bodies and places of deposit for public records, has been developing guidelines and procedures which will help these bodies comply with their responsibilities under the Freedom of Information Act as regards deposited public records.

We would like to hear your views on these draft guidelines, and you are strongly encouraged to send us your comments by Friday 16 July 2004. We would be grateful if you could concentrate on the usefulness, comprehensiveness and clarity of the guidelines themselves rather than commenting on the FOI Act more generally.

Please send your comments to: archive-inspection@nationalarchives.gov.uk.

Please contact Archive Inspection if you would like to receive a paper version of the guidelines.

The draft guidance will be revised as the Department for Constitutional Affairs and the Office of the Information Commissioner release further guidance on specific aspects of the FOI Act.
