'TNA Global Search' wins Best User Experience Award

30 November 2006

The National Archives today has won the Best User Experience category at the International Information Industry Awards, for TNA Global Search.  The award recognises any project or service that has shown outstanding innovation in improving the user experience. The Information Industry Awards are hosted by Online Information 2006 and Information World Review to recognise the achievements of information teams, information and content management projects, vendors and individual information professionals.

TNA Global Search enables genealogists, family historians, academics and other National Archives users to start their research from one single point and access a wealth of information from The National Archives websites at the click of a button.

One of the central components of The National Archives´ recently announced vision is to bring history to life for everyone.  TNA Global Search, powered by Autonomy, is an essential component of The National Archives´ ongoing project to digitise one of the largest collections, of records, in the world, and make 1000 years of British history available online. Autonomy´s revolutionary, meaning-based software provides a unified enterprise platform that can simultaneously query the Archives´ 30 million documents held in 11 disparate catalogues and databases.

The National Archives Director of Collections and Technology, David Thomas, commented:

"The National Archives´ aim is to make the information we hold across all of our websites and catalogues even more accessible, helping to bring history to life for everyone.  The introduction of TNA Global Search means that users worldwide are now able to quickly and easily search through our vast catalogue of records to locate relevant information. We are delighted that TNA Global Search has been recognised for its achievements in improving user experience."

Mike Lynch, CEO of Autonomy Systems, commented:

"It is a great honour to win this award. This award recognises that everything we do is tailored to the needs of the user, and it is entirely fitting that TNA Global Search, the project designed to make our common history more accessible, should be the winning entry."

TNA Global Search allows users to search for information on The National Archives catalogue, DocumentsOnline, Access to Archives (A2A), Moving Here and Family records websites, the National Register of Archives (NRA), the ARCHON Directory and online research guides.
