Starting out: family history

Saturday 25 July, 14:00 - 15:00

Family history is one of our most popular leisure pursuits but there's such a bewildering array of information available to the beginner that it can be hard to know where to start.

This talk will introduce the most important sources for researching your family history, concentrating on The National Archives' collections of census returns, wills and military service records, and demonstrating some of the key online resources.

Audrey Collins worked as a freelance researcher, writer and teacher before joining The National Archives in 2002. She is the author of several books on family history subjects and currently works in the Advice and Records Knowledge department. She also delivers talks on various aspects of The National Archives records both in the UK and overseas.

This is a free event. Tickets will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis on the day and cannot be booked in advance.

You can listen to previous talks given at The National Archives on our Podcast page.
